First Graders conducting corn kernel experiment
First Graders conducting corn kernel experiment
Starting Day 1

We’ve kicked off our first grade community project. On the first day of school, students entered their classrooms to find sensory bins with farm equipment, animals, corn, beans and more. That afternoon, we visited our outdoor classroom to read about corn-a prominent crop in our community. G and D Feed provided 3 types of corn: whole corn, cracked corn and ground corn for students to feel and describe. We concluded with a popcorn snack provided by our Partner in Education, Tanner Williams United Methodist Church. On Wednesday, students visited our science lab to conduct an experiment. Students observed how baking soda and vinegar made corn kernels jump around. On Friday, students identified ways our outdoor garden had changed over the summer break-green plants and vegetables were gone, weeds and grass were growing. Students pulled weeds to prepare our ground for our fall garden. On Monday, students planted a corn kernel to begin our first growing project. We look forward to the return of our MGM students to complete our greenhouse doors. Our greenhouse will be instrumental in our project-based learning this year!
